Hockey's quiet comeback on the school circuit

Astroturf grants, borrowed sticks, and one evangelist PE teacher per district: the national game is rebuilding from the timetable up.

The revival is not televised; it is timetabled. A cluster of schools agreed to give hockey the same weekly periods as cricket, pooled funds for a shared turf, and hired coaches who once played at state level and never quite stopped hoping.

Equipment was the first wall. Sticks cost more than most parents will spend on an experiment, so the district association runs a library: borrow a stick for a season, return it outgrown, take the next size. The scheme's waiting list is its own good news.

Girls' teams have driven the surge. Several schools fielded their first-ever squads this year, coached in the early slot before the ground gets loud, and their inter-school final drew a crowd that surprised everyone including the players.

Scouts have started attending again — quietly, from the boundary, the way they used to. 'We are two seasons from producing someone,' one coach says, with the certainty of a man who has already seen her play.
